Are industries over-relying on AI tools for content creation?

With the rapid usage of AI in all sorts of fields, content creation has seen big changes. From creating articles and social media posts to making advertisements and multimedia, AI has become needed for industries that want to increase efficiency and reduce costs. However, it is not free from creativity, authenticity, and ethics issues. This research report aims to delve into the effects of AI in today’s world – or more specifically: content creation, assess the risks of over-reliance, and determine if companies are balancing innovation with the preservation of human creativity.

Pros of AI Tools in Content Creation

  1. AI Saves Time

One of the biggest advantages of AI is that it can generate large amounts of content in a short time and faster than humans. AI tools such as Jasper can write full-length articles in just 5 minutes. This helps businesses – big or small – create a lot of content easily and smoothly. This can help companies who need to update their social media or post articles. Some companies like BuzzFeed use AI to help them write articles faster and keep up with the fast pace of online content. This helps them make more content with fewer people, benefiting the company.

  1. AI Is Cheaper

For a company to hire a large team of writers, content creators, and designers can be very expensive. Companies usually spend 10% – 30% of their money on this sector. AI, on the other hand, is much cheaper and is usually free to use. It can handle many tasks at one time, helping the company greatly. Since small businesses have to be more careful with money compared to larger companies, AI can help them create content easily and efficiently. Rather than hiring 5 writers to create blogs, etc., a business can use AI to do the exact same job for a quarter of the cost. This is specifically helpful for new businesses or startups with a limited budget.

  1. AI Can Personalize Content

AI tools are also really good at personalizing content. This means that AI can be prompted to create content specifically tailored to a person’s wish – based on their preferences. AI stores and analyzes user data, such as browning history. For example, Netflix uses AI to recommend users on what to watch next depending on the shows/movies they watched before. Another example is that AI can be used for online shopping – suggesting to users what to buy next according to the items they bought previously. This makes the content feel more relevant and keeps people engaged.  This kind of personalization makes content more appealing and helps businesses connect with their audience.

The Bad Side of AI

  1. Content Quality Might Decrease

Over time, the more AI tools create content, the quality wouldn’t be so great. The reason for this is that AI learns from its own past work, which can lead to a “knowledge collapse”, as Andrew J. Peterson says. This means that when AI starts to make more content, it uses the same patterns/ ideas, leading to repetition, which makes the content boring to read. The quality of the content is affected, and people start to notice that it lacks originality. For example, some AI-generated news articles are criticized for being too simple and not offering the depth or insight that human writers can provide.

  1. AI Is Not Very Creative

AI tools are very good at personalization and following patterns, but they are not as creative as humans. This is a disadvantage for industries that rely on AI to create their advertisements or media, especially video production and writing. AI can surely give what a person asks for, but it won’t be able to connect – it lacks the emotional touch, storytelling ability, and imagination that a human has. For instance, an AI might be able to write a basic article, but it won’t be able to grab the attention of the reader like a human writer can. People love content that feels personal and creative, and AI can’t do it as well as a human could.

  1. Bias In AI

AI tools are trained on huge amounts of data, but if that data is biased, the content given would be biased – the AI will be biased too. This is a huge problem an AI could end up creating content that unfairly shows certain groups of people or even ideas. For example, an AI tool that was trained on resumes might favor men over women because the data it learned from had a lot of male candidates. This can lead to unfair outcomes, such as biased hiring decisions or biased news coverage. It is very important for companies to be aware of this and try to make AI as fair and unbiased as possible.

Global Perspective

  1. United States

In the U.S., AI is mostly used in the entertainment and marketing industries, as well as the healthcare and finance industries. In healthcare, “AI advances are also providing great benefits to our social well-being in areas such as precision medicine, environmental sustainability, education, and public welfare.”, according to the United States Department of State

  1. Japan

According to Statista,  “In April 2024, the Japan Business Federation published a report with policy suggestions that acknowledged AI as a driver of economic growth and suggested that Japan should become an AI and robotics superpower to overcome its labor shortages.” Many factories in Japan use AI for assembly lines to make sure of efficiency. In some restaurants and banks in Japan, AI-powered robots assist customers and answer questions.

National Perspective

In India, AI is used in agriculture, healthcare, and e-commerce. In agriculture, farmers get real-time recommendations to help their field, given by AI; it analyzes certain factors to give the results. Companies like Tata Health and Niramai are helping to diagnose diseases like cancer and give access to better healthcare in rural areas. Some e-commerce platforms such as Flipkart or Amazon India use AI to give suggestions on what to buy, based on previous items bought by the customer. AI also helps e-commerce platforms refine delivery routes and make customer experience better. The Indian government is also advertising AI adoption through programs like the National AI Strategy for innovation and economic growth.

Source Evaluation

I think that the sources I chose are unbiased, as most of them are government sites, which are trusted by people and reliable to get information from. My sources provide balanced insights into AI’s applications and risks, but some sources focus on specific regions or industries, which may limit global comprehensiveness.

Conclusion

AI has changed content creation by increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and allowing personal touches. But relying on AI for every single thing poses risks to humans – decreasing their creativity, social concerns, and likely biases. To be balanced, industries must adopt a hybrid approach that blends human creativity with the strengths of AI technology. Globally, countries are using AI in many ways – healthcare, agriculture, etc. As AI continues to grow in importance, it is crucial to have careful regulations and strategic approaches in place to ensure that it fosters innovation while maintaining quality and ethical standards in content creation.
