In Shadows, We Found Light

I couldn’t stop staring. New countries, people, food—everything was new. Why had the Coalition kept this secret? Neopangea, a supercontinent, had areas restricted by the government. Could I find my scattered family here, lost since I was five? My anger burned—at the Coalition, at Noah, and everyone. First, Noah broke up with me, and now I was discovering hidden pieces of our world.

What was happening?

I sat down on the floor of the building, too scared to even think about what I just found out. I bundled myself together, trying to keep out scary thoughts and December chill when I heard footsteps coming towards me. I panicked, and tried to run out when I heard a familiar voice saying, “Cam? What are you doing here?” I stopped in my tracks – dead. I slowly turned around and saw the last person I wanted to see right now – Noah.

His eyes were rimmed with red, and his jet-black hair was messed up – going everywhere. His shirt wasn’t tucked in, and he had bags around his eyes. He looked like literal trash. What had happened to him? Was the state he was in after a breakup? He should’ve gotten over it by now. After all, he was the one who broke up with me.

I just stared at him, surprised as to why he came here. He ran a hand through his hair, looking guilty, and said, “I work for Coalition, helping them build their business, and…yeah.” That ripped my heart. Him? Working for some vile company? Oh god. My life was just wonderful.

“So…why are you here? I answered your question,” Noah said, his unease evident in the way he shifted. I felt a surge of satisfaction at his discomfort. Without a word, I scoffed, pushing my way out of his office and heading straight for the fire exit. I dashed down the stairs, my heart pounding by the time I reached the ground floor. As I stepped outside, a bakery caught my eye — perfect.

The little bell above the door jingled as I entered, and a cheerful, plump lady quickly ushered me to a table, handing me a digital menu. I sank into my seat, finally feeling at ease. But just as I started to relax, the door opened again. And there he was — Noah. I turned the other way, hoping he wouldn’t recognize me, but of course, he did. He sat down at my table and I refused to look at him. I closed my eyes, focusing on the devastating news I had witnessed. Why did the Coalition say that land was restricted? Didn’t they say we had to be united, to make this land a better place? Then, it hit me: Was the Coalition using that land for something corrupt?

Noah broke my flow of thoughts, “Camira. Please listen to me – for once. I need your help in something that could destroy or save our future. Please – Camira, are you even listening?”

I responded by shrugging. “When you broke up with me, I think I made it pretty clear that I would never talk to you. EVER. AGAIN.” Noah flinched and stared down at the floor. “Camira – what I did was a mistake – I’m sorry. But can you please help me with this? It’s very important and -”

I was fed up at this point – how often would he ask me? I decided to cave, and see what he needed help with. “Oh god, fine! Stop acting like a baby!” He looked taken aback, but I detected a hint of a smile on his face.

“You know I work for the Coalition, right? During one of their grand meetings, I needed to go in to deliver something to one of the people there. When I stumbled inside, I heard them talking about new land that they had never opened for the public -”

“Yeah, yeah I know that. So what do you need help with?”

Noah only looked surprised for a moment but then shook his head. “I need you to help me find these lands – regain control of them and let people live there, in harmony. Besides, I hope I can also find my family there, just like you want to.”

I raised an eyebrow at him, keeping my emotions balanced. When did I ever tell him that?

“So…will you help me or not?” he asked. After a sigh, I replied, “Fine. But this is for me, not you.” He looked disappointed, and I added, “Get over it. This is your last chance, so make it count.”

He stammered, “I might not, and, uh, we should probably leave because of…,” and he nodded towards the plump lady, who looked anything but friendly right now. I nodded at him, and we ran out of the cafe.

“Where do we start?”

“First, let’s go to the office and see what we can find. Oh! I forgot to tell you – the Coalition was planning to go somewhere today – I think a place called…Bharat? Not sure.”

I rolled my eyes, and said, “We have to get on that ride there. Are they taking a Solaris?”

“Yeah.”

We slipped into a trunk, hidden in the shadows, and traveled for an hour. When we emerged, hundreds of slaves toiled over strange machines. A gate loomed nearby—one button and families could be reunited.

We moved toward it, knowing the Coalition would strike back. As the button was pressed, chaos broke loose. But our hope vanished when they captured us, dragging us to a raised platform. Knives at our throats, we met the price of freedom without a flinch.

I was relieved to see a new land where people could thrive—a place I had helped open. Noah had been crucial, and he smiled at me as we sat on the platform. I smiled back, grateful we had unlocked this land. As the blade sliced through, slowly, I felt at peace. Hundreds watched, thankful for their freedom.
