The Paradox of Time

Luna walked through the vast landscape, dotted with lush, green trees and blooming flowers – things she hadn’t seen before. The scene seemed so strange, but so vastly familiar at the same time. She kept walking, absorbing the beauty of the environment, comparing it with how it was back home. She was lost in her thoughts when suddenly she recognized something – The Empire State Building. She was in New York! But it seemed like an alternate reality altogether. What was this place?

She went inside, and an elderly woman was sitting behind the counter, clicking on a round, white thing furiously and glaring at a big, black box that had illuminated light.

“I need that money! This job doesn’t pay me properly – I NEED TO BE RICH!” , she screamed.

Luna approached the elderly woman carefully, “Uh ma’am? Could you please tell me the date and year?”

The elderly woman looked up at her with steely eyes. “Dear, are you stupid enough not to know?! It’s the 7th of April, 2023!”

Luna almost fell down. 2023? What was happening? She ran outside to get a clearer picture and it all came back to her; how similar everything was, yet so different. This world was surrounded by nature but her home was nothing but a wasteland – full of crimes, evil, and injustice. She held her head, still in shock.

The vibrant greenery of the alternate New York flickered like a dying lightbulb, fading in and out of existence. The distant sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves melted away, replaced by the dimly lit room and the low murmur of voices around her.

Luna came back to reality.

It was the summer of 2125.  Luna and Lucas were exhausted  trying to shield their apartment from miscreants. Crime was at an all time high and people were actually being paid to create havoc in cities. The more the damage, the more the payment. and the brains behind this nefarious plan belonged to the Tres Nefandi. A few others and them wanted to put an end to them, so they could live a free life, and their plan was ready.

The entire group was fitted with laser guns, AK-47s, and sonic weapons, all of them fully developed and adhered to the latest technology. Hard kevlar vests covered their chests, with an extra invisible barrier to deflect the most dangerous of weapons. They walked up to the gigantic structure that loomed over them – The Tres Nefadi’s headquarters – all of them casting solemn looks at each other, hoping to get out of there alive.

All of them pressed a pale, blue button on their outfit. They turned invisible, and were able to bypass the security easily. They stepped into the elevator, and pressed the button to go to the highest floor. The lift rocketed sideways, and then sped up to the highest floor. Once they stepped out, and burst into the room that was closest to them, they saw a magnificent sight – all of the Tres Nefadi’s members passed out on the couches, empty whiskey glasses in their hands.

Luna signalled to 3 of the most skilled assassins in her group to kill them all with 3 clean shots. As soon as they did that, Lucas noticed something on the table – a letter. He picked it up and showed it to Luna.

“We know you were coming, and we know why. We didn’t know what stress we put on people, and thought it was their way of fun. But let us tell you a secret – we aren’t human. We come from another planet, and were thrown away as outcasts due to cultural reasons.

So, we settled on Earth, determined to help, but instead, destroyed it. We didn’t mean to cause any harm, so when we found out about you, we decided not to harm you, but rather, let you kill us. You have freed us from the job, and we now entrust you to be the ruler; but do not be like us.

Regards,

Tres Nefadi ”

Luna and Lucas looked at each other. They now knew all the answers to every single question they wanted an answer to, and were able to make Earth a place where life could thrive.
