Shattered Innocence

Flash Fiction

Skipping home from school, 7- year old Katie couldn’t wait to show her mom a painting she had done of her family in school today. ‘She’s going to be so proud!’, she thought to herself with glee. Clutching the painting in her hand, she walked into her home calling out to her mom. The house was deathly quiet. “Mom?”, Katie called out in a hesitant voice. She went into the ‘family’ room as her parents liked to call it and saw an upturned chair; her mom’s feet swinging gently in the air.

The painting dropped to the floor.
